Hai Ky Gi Mia - 707 Ellis at Larkin St., SFCA

A while back I visited this place and immediately fell in love in love with it. For those who didn't see that post, Hai Ky Gi Mia is basically a Vietnamese restaurant, except that the owners are Chao Zhou Chinese. Approximately one third of the Chinese population in Vietnam is of Chao Zhou descent. Their cuisine is one that is vastly under-represented here in SF, which is a shame because it has a lot to offer. The last major resto serving this style, Fortune Restaurant on Broadway, has been gone for a long time.
You won't see a lot of that cuisine here either because the focus is on noodles, and not just pho. Pictured here is the Braised Duck Leg Won Ton Ho Fun Noodles (6.95). I asked to have it served 'wet' with the broth mixed in; you can order it 'dry' with the broth served separately. The menu says it comes with egg noodles, but you can have any noodle you like. The other trick is seasoning. You have soy sauce, sriracha, fish sauce, sugar, vinegar, jalapeno juice, white pepper, hoisin, etc. If you have time, dig around on Yelp for a write-up from about a year ago, by a regular customer who explains what noodles go with your choice of meats and other toppings. He lists his favorites and tells you his method of seasoning for each.
The duck leg is braised in soy sauce and spices. The won ton are pork and shrimp. The broth is light but flavorful. If you're looking for a filling bowl of goodness for less than $10, this is it!

  1. Best duck leg soup in town!
I love the pickled carrots and cucumber they give you with it.

Also highly recommended is the Sate egg noodle soup. Not much of a soup because it is so thick with peanuts. Thickest, peanutiest version I've ever encountered. Not for the faint of heart...ie those with heart problems.
